The 2019 Sutter Creek Drag Racing and Hot Rodding Film Festival is an inside look at the high speed and drama of Top Fuel Nostalgia Drag Racing that has appeal for racers and novices alike. It showcases two feature length and one short film and concludes with a concert with the racer’s Joe Walla Band.
Fast Lane Summer, Produced and Directed by Aaron Bleich, is high speed, high drama. It is the inside picture of what life is like for a Top Fuel Nostalgia racing team. Weeks of preparation for six seconds of speed… ending with the burst of a parachute to slow you back down… or a burst of flame from an exploded engine. Fast Lane Summer is an inside picture of what life is like for the owner… and for the people he depends on… his crew chief and his mechanics, his friends and family, his sponsors, and of course his driver. It chronicles the constant tuning, testing, and traveling… the good times and the bad times…and the desperate times as well. The times when things are running smoothly and everyone is riding high… and the times when nothing seems to work at all… and you don’t know who to blame. Fast Lane Summer is an exciting subject for fans familiar with racing because it brings you right inside the team… and inside a racing series as well. Fast Lane Summer is equally exciting for the layman.
Slingshot! by Les Mayhew, Nitro America is a Short Documentary that some say is the finest video of front engine nitro burners ever. Not only does Slingshot give you all the action, from perspectives you don’t usually see, but also gets you into the minds of the crazy bastards who race and tune them.
Famosa 2001 – Pure Nitro, Directed by Rich Raymond, is an inside look at one of the greatest of competitive races today…the annual March Meet held at the Famosa Raceway, the famous dragstrip located north of Bakersfield. The strip was originally built in World War II as an auxiliary training base for the nearby Army Air Corps training base. It was in the 1950’s that the Bakersfield Smokers, an aspiring group of drag racing pioneers purchased the strip and made the necessary adjustments to allow for drag racing. The raceway hosted the first ever March Meet in 1959 and it continues to this day drawing over 30,000 spectators during its annual three day run. The track also hosts the wildly popular California Hot Rod Reunion in October.
