Exceptional among modern fiddlers for his versatility and depth, Darol Anger has helped drive the evolution of the contemporary string band through his involvement with numerous pathbreaking ensembles such as his Republic Of Strings, the Turtle Island String Quartet, the David Grisman Quintet, Montreux, the Duo and other ensembles. Today Darol can be heard on NPR's "Car Talk" theme every week, along with Earl Scruggs, David Grisman and Tony Rice. He has recorded and produced scores of important recordings since 1977, is a MacDowell and UCross Fellow, and has received numerous composers' residencies and grants. He is a featured soloist on dozens of recordings and motion picture soundtracks.

In Greek mythology, the Furies were ferocious godlike avengers who would swoop down on mere mortals and destroy them with relish (or, in rare cases, mustard). The only difference here is that when these fantastically talented presences swoop down on Darol Anger, the result is not destruction but inspiration.

Darol, as aficionados of string music know, is a flat-out fiddle guru, unique in his vast range and profound depth, who has spent the past three decades reinventing American string music to encompass his explorations of bluegrass, jazz, and musical traditions from around the world. The groups that he founded or co-founded include the David Grisman Quintet, the Turtle Island String Quartet, Psychograss, Montreux, and the Republic of Strings ensemble. His playing and composition overflow with passion, prodigious technique, and a great sense of humor. He has spent his career enlightening and inspiring his fellow musicians, and vice-versa.

That’s where the Furies come in. Tristan Clarridge is one of the most influential and brilliant string musicians ever to come out of the west coast, playing cello and fiddle, A 6 TIME GRAND NATIONAL CHAMPION FIDDLE PLAYER. Maeve Gilchrist is the scariest and most exciting Celtic harpist ever. Sharon Gilchrist is a mandolin marvel who has played with Uncle Earl, the Peter Rowan and Tony Rice quartet, and Laurie Lewis and the Right Hands. Emy Phelps is a remarkable vocalist and a star in the Pacific Northwest who put her career on hold to raise four kids and is now back in the game. When these four powerful forces get together with Darol, the result is mythical, magical, and downright fun.

"From the first time I heard Rita sing, her voice gripped me and did not let go,"--Joe Craven.

Her voice, called a "soulful howl from the mountains" is calling attention around the country. "This California girl comes by her mountain-music sensibility with true authenticity, with original songs deeply rooted in her family's frontier experience," (Dan Ruby, FestivalPreview.com.) Rita will play with her band, Cousin Jack, composed of Sean Feder on banjo and dobro, Andy Lentz on fiddle, and Bill Dakin on upright bass and guitar. Their close harmonies and strong backup embrace and support a rich, acoustic folk-grass sound.

"In scorching form" (UK Telegraph), Northern California's own Rita Hosking sings of forest fires, culture clash, demolition derbies, the working class and hope. From major U.S. festivals to Bob Harris's BBC show, Rita is moving audiences around the globe with her stories in song and doubly sweet and sinewy voice, "a captivating performer," (R2 Magazine.)

Rita's style of country-folk has been lauded for story and sense of place, and her performances praised for capturing the audience. Honors include winner of the 2008 Dave Carter Memorial Songwriting Contest at the Sisters Folk Festival, finalist in the 2009 Telluride Music Festival Troubadour Contest, and more. "This California girl comes by her mountain-music sensibility with true authenticity, with original songs deeply rooted in her family's frontier experience," (Dan Ruby, FestivalPreview.com) and Rita's fans call her "the real deal". A descendant of Cornish miners who sang in the mines, Rita grew up with deep regard for folk music and the power of the voice.

Her 2011 release, Burn, is a fiery follow-up to Come Sunrise, which won Best Country Album Vox Pop in the 2010 Independent Music Awards. Burn was recently placed in the top 10 "Young Female Artist releases for 2011" by No Depression magazine, and listed as a "Hidden Gem of 2011" by the UK's Observer. In an Oregon reviewer's words, Burn is "a sledgehammer to my heart" (Frank Gutch Jr.)

Rita’s other accolades include Best Country Album nomination ("Come Sunrise") for the 2010 Independent Music Awards, Winner of the 2008 Dave Carter Memorial Songwriting Contest at the Sisters Folk Festival in Oregon, and Finalist in the 2009 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Troubador Contest. "Come Sunrise," her third album, was recorded in Austin with producer and guitarist, Rich Brotherton (Robert Earl Keen, Caroline Herring.) "Superb country-folk from a brilliant singer-songwriter," (Americana UK.)

"Heartfelt country soul set by someone who's quietly become one of the best." ~Maverick Magazine

"Her breed of Nor Cal country folk ain't quite old-timey, and it ain't quite bluegrass, but damn it's sweet. For fans of Emmylou and Gillian, this one's a safe bet. The songs of Rita Hosking are as fragile as a newborn baby, and defiant as a West Virginia coal miner." --Stuart Mason, Fiddlefreak Folk Review

"A sledgehammer to my heart." ~Frank O. Gutch of Rock and Reprise, writing of Rita's latest album, BURN.

"There's a grit to her songs and a sinewy toughness to her voice that weave their own spell." --Q Magazine

"With an of-the-earth, gnarled voice that ranges from high and sweet to down-home and ferocious, Hosking had the audience in the palm of her hand, and the line to buy her CD's snaked through the Sierra meadows." --Ami Chen-Mills Naim, Santa Cruz Weekly about Rita's performances at Strawberry Music Festival.

"The first thing that hits you is the strength and power in Rita Hosking's voice, and the fierce passion it contains." --Bob Gottlieb, Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange

"Superb country-folk from a brilliant singer-songwriter." --Americana UK

With her latest release, "Little Boat" Hosking has an powerful, expressive voice, and she is clearly enjoying performing on what is in many ways a very personal album — her husband Sean Feder plays Dobro and banjo, and her daughter Kora (who co-wrote a song) plays clawhammer banjo. Producer Rich Brotherton, at whose Austin, Texas studio Little Boat was recorded, features on guitar, bass and most everything else apart from the kitchen sink. The result is beautifully textured and harmonious Americana.

Check out a cut from her latest album below.

A prolific recorder (more than 19 albums) with a silky soprano voice, Anne Hills has become one of the better known voices of the contemporary folk music scene, receiving awards and recognition for her live performances (2009 Bound for Glory live radio show favorite- Ithaca, NY), her unique solo and collaborative recording projects (2001 WAMMIE for duet CD with Tom Paxton, Under American Skies), and her overall artistry and benefit work (2002 Kate Wolf Award, Carole Robertson Award & Kerrville Female Vocalist of the Year 1997).

Her song “Follow That Road” was the title cut of the Martha’s Vineyard Songwriter Retreat and has enchanted audiences for over a decade. Whether she is singing her own song, the words of 6 year old Opal Whiteley, or the Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley, accompanied with her guitar, banjo, or simply a Tibetan bell, she puts her whole heart and soul into the moment. So, even if you haven’t become familiar with her voice (featured often on XM/Sirius Folk Radio, The Midnight Special & many other folk shows) you won’t want to miss a chance to hear her songs and stories in person. She’s just begun touring more extensively, winning over audiences with her warm, lively and humorous performances.

The AllMusic Guide says, “A stunning soprano tone has made Anne Hills one of contemporary music’s premiere vocalists. Her knack for writing heartfelt songs brought her to the upper echelon of her craft.”

“Anne Hills is such an exquisite singer that it’s understandable that people might be swept up in the pure beauty of her voice and thereby overlook her writing. That would be a mistake. For me, Anne’s writing, in songs like ‘Follow That Road’ and many others, is as direct, melodic and deep as any work being done today. She is quite simply one of my absolute favorite songwriters.” — Tom Paxton

Frank Vignola & Vinnie Raniolo

Calling Frank Vignola a virtuoso is something of an understatement. Recognized primarily as a world-class jazz guitarist, but well versed in every genre, his resume includes work with a range of artists from Ringo Starr to Wynton Marsalis, Tommy Emmanuel and the legendary Les Paul, with whom he performed regularly for a number of years.

Frank Vignola is one of the most extraordinary guitarists performing before the public today. His stunning virtuosity has made him the guitarist of choice for many of the world's top musicians, including Ringo Starr, Madonna, Donald Fagen, Wynton Marsalis, Tommy Emmanuel, the Boston Pops, the New York Pops, and guitar legend Les Paul, who named Vignola to his "Five Most Admired Guitar List" for the Wall Street Journal. Vignola's jaw-dropping technique explains why the New York Times deemed him "one of the brightest...stars of the guitar".

As a young adult, Vignola studied at the Cultural Arts Center of Long Island and went on to enjoy an enormous amount of sideman gigs in the 1980s including recording and touring with the likes of Madonna, Leon Redbone, Ringo Starr as well as coming into his own as a leader in 1988 with his famed Hot Club of France tribute which was hailed in the NY Times as one of the top ten acts in New York City in 1988 and forged the way for the many Django Hot Club groups that followed. The New Yorker was 27 when, in 1993, he signed with Concord Jazz and recorded his first Concord session as a leader, Appel Direct. Many more Concord releases followed in the 1990s as well as 3 releases for the Telarc label as co-leader of the group Travelin' Light. The early 2000's found Vignola recording a solo guitar CD for Acoustic Disc as well as performing regularly with guitarist, Les Paul. This also marked the time that Frank began working with record producer Joel Dorn as well as making featured appearances on Atlantic, Sony and Warner Brothers Records with the likes of Donald Fagen, Queen Latifah, Mark O Connor and Wynton Marsalis. He also recorded a collection of Gershwin pieces for Mel Bay Records titled, "Vignola Plays Gershwin" which was number 2 in NPR radio airplay charts. In recent years, Vignola has recorded two important collaborative CD's, "Just Between Frets" with Tommy Emmanuel on Solid Air Records and "Frank-N-Dawg, Melody Monsters" with mandolinist David Grisman on Acoustic Disc Records.
